This article explains why a password may be rejected during account setup in Promote, and what steps to take to create a secure password.

Overview
When creating or updating a password in Promote, the password is automatically checked against databases of known breached passwords. If the password appears in public breach data, it cannot be used in Promote.
You may see the following message:
“Password has appeared in a list of known passwords and should never be used. Please select a different password.”
This helps keep accounts secure by preventing the use of passwords that are considered unsafe.
Why this happens
If you receive this error message, it does not mean that:
- The password was leaked from Promote
- The password was previously used in Promote
- The Promote account has been compromised
It simply means that the password exists in publicly available breach data and is therefore blocked for security reasons.
Passwords that appear in breach data are often reused in attempted logins across different services. To reduce this risk, Promote does not allow these passwords to be used.
What to do next
To continue, create a new password that:
- Has not appeared in known breach data
- Is unique and not reused from another service
- Is strong and difficult to guess
Recommended security steps:
As an extra precaution, we recommend the following:
- Avoid using the rejected password on other websites or services
- Update the password anywhere else it may already be in use
Summary
Promote is functioning correctly and securely. The only action needed is to create a new, unique password that has not previously appeared in public breach data.
